As an illustration of how Secure Dwellings is helping single mothers and their children overcome their situations, I would like to take this opportunity and share a story about one of the mothers. For confidentiality reason, I will name her Hazel. Hazel had her son taken away by DHR because she had no home to take him when she had him in the parking lot of a local Wal-Mart. Hazel found herself pregnant again, but she had found a homeless shelter in Birmingham to live until she could do better. Hazel was accepted into Secure Dwellings Program in the winter.

Once Hazel entered the program, she begin working with DHR and Secure Dwellings to develop a plan for her to get her child back. Hazel’s son is now back with her and his youngest brother, a family reunited because of the stability the program afford her. We are currently assisting Hazel and DHR with getting Hazel permanent housing and employment in Birmingham.

If everything continues to progress, Hazel will be in her own place by or before the date of this board meeting. In essence, Secure Dwellings helped Hazel reunite with her son and as a result of the help she received from the program she was able to rejoice in hope and overcome her tribulation with help of the staff and other agencies encouraging her to be patient and prayerful as she worked to get her family under one roof.
