This week we were assigned to read to different articles. The first article was written by Peggy McIntosh titled, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”. Throughout the article, Peggy showed the readers what it means to have white privilege. She showed the readers 50 different types of “advantages” that whites get over other races, such as African Americans. This is the biggest theme throughout her entire piece.
Anderson’s essay appeared in Maclean’s magazine for the general reader. Name all the ways in which her essay seems designed for that person. Doris Anderson’s essay is designed for any person due to the fact that the situation she mentions could apply to anyone. Racism and Degrading rights of women are still societal issues that the world needs to know and find solution to this inhumane problem. THINKING
Unlike during the Unmentionable Times, when men created “towers [that] rose to the sky,” it is an affliction to be born with powerful intellectual capacity and ambition in Ayn Rand’s apocalyptic, nameless society in Anthem. Collectivism is ostensibly the moral guidepost for humanity, and any perceived threat to the inflexible, authoritarian regime is met with severe punishment. The attack on mankind’s free will and reason is most evident in the cold marble engraving in the Palace of the World Council: “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (6). Societal norms force homogeneity and sacrifice among all people.
Attempting to break free of social constructions and otherness, Rochelle Brock delves into deep inquiry for the advancement of her pedagogy. Brock utilizes an interesting style of writing where she inserts an explanation, through a quote or internal dialogue, about the situation at hand; whether it be with her students or with the god to whom she was seeking guidance, Oshun. Dissecting the conversations inside her own head and those of the four students invited over for dialogue on the matter, she is able to examine the difference in rhetorical strategies used to suppress others and to combat otherness. The chapter, “Sista to Sista to Sista,” takes up a decent portion of the book and revolves around dialogue between Brock and four students regarding their experiences as Black women.
I read White Teacher by Vivian Gussin Paley and was immediately drawn in by her writing style. I also find it easy to relate to her as the proverbial female, middle class, white teacher (or soon to be in my case) and her concerns about whether to draw attention to her students’ differences (would this make it better or worse for that student?) or pretend that there are no differences (is that fair to that student, to the whole class?). The questions she posed in her preface really summed up what I have found myself grappling with in this class: is this classroom in which I live a fair place for every child who enters? Does every child and family have an equal say in the worlds we invent?
This essay will be about a book with a very different world from ours. In Anthem the "Normal" day is very opposite from ours, in many ways physically and mentally main character Equality is a man very much like us in a society that shuns him for being so. His average day consisted of waking up, eating breakfast and working until it was time to attend the theater. Then inevitably starting the process over each day until the age of 40. For them in their age of evolution the age of forty is the verge of the end for them and they sit in a retirement home till the end.
The lecture on African Americans in the 1920s by Professor David Canton is very disturbing. His lecture was on the different unjust treatment that African Americans endured. The professor, to me, was trying to make the listener feel the anguish that African Americans did in the 1920s. In some sense he appeared passionate and at times angry about the treatment of African Americans. The government supported this hostile treatment because they believed African Americans were being subversive if they stood up and defended themselves.
On March 1 2017, I attended an event for the anthology A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota. This event included readings, musical performances, and a choreographed performance. The entire event completely captivated me, but I was most impacted by Andrea Jenkins reading from her part of the anthology titled “The Price We Pay: How Race and Gender Identity Converge”. In her piece, she talked a lot about gender identity, race, and how they intersect.
When I joined AVID in seventh grade I was amazed how AVID works and how it can be used every day. Not only AVID helps you with your grades, but it also helps you to be more organized and a hard-working student. AVID helped me discover my full potential by showing me that I can always do better. What I mean by this is that in sixth grade I was not in AVID, I made all A’s and B’s. In seventh grade when I was in AVID, I made all A’s.
As a child, she recognized that her imitation of ‘White” afforded opportunities of mobility, education, acceptance and privilege. Her mother’s appearance as “Black” afforded opportunities of poverty, inferiority, and inequality. So, she fails to mention her mother’s identity and occupation to classroom peers and teacher. Sarah Jane wants cultural assimilation and white privilege.
They support this claim by using the matrix of domination in relation to gender, race and class, then advise the reader to look at an issue through a broad perspective- realizing both the oppressor and the oppressed, and finally distinguish between recognizing and understanding diversity and not just acknowledging it. Andersen and Collins’ purpose is to have students think about race, class and gender as systems of power, how the three categories matter in shaping everyone lived experiences, and to understand race, class, and gender are linked experiences. Furthermore, Anderson and Collins adopt an unbiased, and assertive yet friendly tone for his/her audience, the readers and others interested in the topic of race, class and gender. By doing this, the readers can relate to the struggles that the issues bring up, however the authors can still get their point or message across
Rosa Parks once said, “Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome.” She describes that the future of our world has to be aware of things that have happened in the past, such as racism. The NAACP, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is a civil rights organization that displayed their position on this certain situation. The NAACP position is correct in that Mark Twain’s un-sanitized version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be taught because the book describes the important awareness of the historical oppression of people, it provides a value of morality from that time period that students should learn, and gives an important lesson about race that should be taught to students.
The first and most important display of diversity is when Mrs. Elliot splits up the class by eye color. The point of this was to teach students how little sense is made from treating someone based on an aspect of their appearance. A clear example of social justice in the film is shown shortly after the class is divided, when the blue eyed children were given extra recess time while the brown eyed students didn’t get any recess time at all. There was no clear reason why one group was seen as superior and given more privilege aside from the children’s’ eye color; this is an issue that is still seen often today. The whole documentary is about a social experiment involving discrimination.
Something that I’ve learned from this course was the term “intersectionality” and how that plays into equity. While isolating an issue does help in understanding its roots, the next step we should be taking is to understand the interconnecting nature of social identities. This many help us to become a more equitable society. For example, when Chelsea facilitated the workshop where we touched upon intersectionality in the pay gap, we learned how both gender and racial identity can affect an individual’s wage. While white women earn $0.74 to a white man’s dollar, black women only make $0.64.
Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
