The destructive power of obsession and love can corrupt one's morals and can lead to one hollow and unfulfilling existence. And consumed by desires and being unable to control their actions, leads to tragic consequences. Set in the booming 20s after the great war “The Great Gatsby '' displays an extravagant and over-the-top 20s with a story of love and despair. In his book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author displays that corruption from obsession and love hurts more people than helps.

Love and obsession are two things that shouldn't be mixed in The Great Gatsby love and obsession become blurred together. It's all stated early in chapter two, Tom and Myrtle are arguing over if Myrtle has any right to mention Daisy's name. Standing in front of big hulking Tom’s face Myrtle yells “Daisy! Daisy! Daisy! I’ll say it whenever I want to Daisy Dai-”(Fitzgerald 37). Followed by a right hand from yours truly Tom. Even though Tom's cheating on his wife Daisy, he still loves Daisy and won't let someone like his side chick disrespect his wife. They, later on, reconnect their love but like Romeo and Juliet, it starts great but then falls off a cliff. Gatsby is obsessed with Daisy clinging on to the past. His obsession is demonstrated on multiple occasions throughout the story. Gatsby's obsession with Daisy and the past is what gets him killed. When Gatsby hits Myrtle with his car Nick warns him to “ go away” and that “It's pretty certain they'll trace your car”(Fitzgerald 148). He stays, blinded by his love and obsession for Daisy. Getting him killed by Myrtle's husband Wilson who's also thinking he's doing the right thing by killing Gatsby even though Daisy hit Myrtle. Everyone's actions are out of love and obsession for their partner/friend. Everyone believed they were doing right but it ended up hurting more people than
