Many people wonder how the post-apocalyptic obsession has lasted so long. What is it about this dangerous, grueling world that people adore so much? Is it the action? Or is it just a question of what society could turn into? Something that grabs—and holds—audiences attention is the survivor's stories. How they ban together, become something more, and even lose things along the way. The Walking Dead keeps people's attention because it shows survivors staying persistent, adapting to become better, and surviving against the odds.

One character has made a drastic change over the course of the show in order to survive. Carol begins the show being a timid woman, something probably owed to her abusive, controlling husband. In the beginning she believes women should stick to housework and let the men deal with the laborious work. Her attitude slowly changes as the show continues on. But a moment that truly changes her is after the group gets separated because of a fight with the Governor, who destroyed their home at the prison. Carol, Tyreese, baby Judith, and two young sisters, Lizzie and Mika, are on their way to Terminus, a supposed safe haven. Lizzie obviously has something wrong with her because she believes she can talk to the walkers and that they do not actually wish to harm them. To prove her point, Lizzie kills her younger sister Mika so she can come back as a walker. Realizing what a threat unstable Lizzie is, Carol takes on the responsibility of killing Lizzie.
