"Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th." - Julie Andrews. This quote tells about how you have to never give up, and how you learn after falling down over and over again. This is the main idea of the book, Esperanza Rising. Esperanza Rising is a book about a young girl who learns about the importance of love and sacrifice for family and friends, but it also tells what poor families, especially immigrants and farm laborers, must experience. The character who changes the most is Esperanza because she perseveres, works hard, and helps others.
Esperanza would always persevere, even in demanding times. A few examples of this include her experiencing mountains and valleys, such as when Mama was ill. She wanted to stop working and take care of Mama, but she knew she would have to take care of the babies and work at the same time. An example of this is when Marta is hiding in the shed. Esperanza was about to say no, but she felt sympathetic for her, even after how rude she was in her first few days of arriving. She then gives Marta an apron and a few bundles of asparagus, so she can disguise herself as a field worker in case anyone questions her. Marta thanks Esperanza for helping her and apologizes to her. Even though the risk was big, Esperanza still helped Marta. If she was caught, then she could have also been on the bus. “But then she thought about Marta and her mother holding hands and couldn’t imagine them being separated from each other.” (Ryan, P. 208) Esperanza was about to turn her back on Marta, but she thought about her, and how she was always by her mother’s side.
