The book Esperanza Rising by Pam Muoz Ryan is a novel about the life of a young girl named Esperanza Ortega and the hardships of moving to a different country and adapting to a new way of life. The story takes place in the 1930s during the great depression in Aguascalientes, Mexico where Esperanza and her family live a very comfortable life which aligns with her self-concept and social identity, but this doesn't last for long because when her father gets tragically killed by bandits Esperanza goes through an emotional and cognitive transformation. These conditions relate to deviance and conformity within the community. Strikes are very common because the workers always demand better working conditions and health care because sickness is very common when you are working in terrible conditions and Esperanza becomes aware of the social injustices affecting her community like when she offers to work in the fields or sheds but Miguel says she isn't old enough and only men are allowed on the fields but Esperanza is determined to work and doesn't want to cut potato eyes for the next three weeks with her mother and Josefina, and gets told that she would have to be good at cutting potato eyes for the next three weeks with eyes to tie grapes and if she is good at tying grapes they would hire her for asparagus. Later on in the story, Esperanza matures and takes on more responsibilities and manages to save up enough money to bring her grandmother Abuelita to California.
