The obstacle in this story is familial, and it is shown through conflicts, character, and setting. Patrick’s character represents a familial obstacle when he tells Mary he is leaving her. The text states: “For God’s sake,” he said, hearing her, but not turning round. “Don’t make supper for me. Didn't lose a soul, thank the Lord, but we had to double and triple up in the remaining tents like sardines. (P.100)”. This quote about the setting shows environmental obstacles by allowing us to see the struggles the characters on ABC camp have with the weather on Mount Everest. The characters encountered a horrible storm that caused a deadly avalanche that they had to persevere through and fight not only to get back to base camp but to survive. Secondly, environmental obstacles can also be demonstrated through the plot for instance, "Alive ... at least the last time we looked. But he has HAPE bad."
