In The Odyssey, the twenty years Odysseus was away from his family, Ithaca, and people took a greater toll on him than anyone else. Even though others had struggled, he had the worst time during the twenty years he was away. Looking at the effects the time had on Odysseus and his father Laertes were very different. Laertes decides to live in poor conditions along with some of his servants. Laertes decides to do so because he’s mourning the absence of his son so he isolates himself to deal with it. Laertes switches his lavish, wealthy lifestyle to a simpler one that Odysseus was forced into. Odysseus had to give up his former life to be able to survive in the conditions he was in. Odysseus constantly had someone preventing him from getting home. When Odysseus would try to progress in his journey he always had a new obstacle ahead of him setting him back. While Odysseus tried to get back home , his father, Laertes chooses to leave to deal with the absence of Odysseus. During his journey Odysseus finds out that his mother is dead and that devastates him but he still This ends up being his lowest point throughout his whole journey and during his grievance he still manages to pull through obstacles. When he went to the Land of Dead and saw his mother, he might have not been able to touch her, but he got to talk to her and ask about his family and that helped him not give up on his journey to get back to Ithaca. Odysseus also watched his men get killed in a shipwreck as a consequence from Zeus because they killed Helios’s cattle.. Odysseus had mythical creatures and gods against him that in the end wanted him dead, to suffer or to not get home. Whenever Odysseus tried to get back on track to get back to Ithaca a new obstacle got in his way that put his life in danger which was most of the time. He could barely progress on his journey to get back home because he always had a setback. Odysseus had to keep on going even when he saw his mother in the Land of the Dead and saw his men get killed. He grieved those deaths and was more still able to continue on with his journey to get back home. Apart from encountering the mythical creatures Odysseus was able to defeat them, but he later on had to face the consequences of his actions unlike the people that got away with crimes. Penelope, Odysseus wife, had suitors all around her that wanted power to take over Ithaca that stole food and valuables from her own house. This may have been exhausting to Penelope, but she was still in a better condition than Odysseus was at the time. Penelope had her son in control of Ithaca, got raise her son, wasn’t threatened all of the time and still lived a wealthy life, her suffering did not match to Odysseus in the
