Relationships are like a race. There are an abundance of difficult pieces of them. It takes an incredibly large amount of effort to finish and have the best race possible. It is the same with relationships. You must work earnestly to overcome the countless challenges that relationships bring. There are numerous obstacles that can prevent the building of long-lasting relationships. Obstacles that obstruct long-lasting relationships are failure to communicate, selfishness, and contention. First, an obstacle that prevents long-lasting relationships is failure to communicate. The Montegues and Capulets are constantly angry at each other. Because Romeo and Juliet are from different families and are in love, they will be hated. With their families all fighting against their relationship over time, Juliet declared, “My only love sprung from my only hate!” (1.5.136). Because Juliet and her family have always hated the Montegues, she won’t be able to maintain a relationship with Romeo. Since the two families hate each other, Romeo and Juliet do not have anyone supporting them in their relationship. Instead, they are being pulled apart by their families. One instance where contention impeded Romeo and Juliet's relationship was when Romeo killed Tybalt and as a result was banished from Verona. Tybalt loved to fight and cause contention. Benvolio explained, talking about Tybalt, “...could not take truce with unruly spleen of Tybalt deaf to peace, but that he tilts…” (3.1.150-151). Benvolio is saying that Tybalt will not stop fighting and is deaf to peace. The fight Tybalt started caused Romeo to kill him and become banished. Romeo’s banishment essentially ended his relationship with Juliet because he couldn’t be with her. contention does not sustain
