Oddest Pair of Similarites and Differences: Princess Diana and Antigone
Why is Princess Diana a rebel despite being influential? Princess Diana was an influential rebel because she broke protocols to fit her morals. Both Diana and Antigone stood their ground and were not ashamed to break the rules. However, they had their differences in the severity of their rule-breaking. For example, Diana broke many stigmas in society and lived for herself rather than the royal family, while Antigone committed a crime in her town to give her brother proper respect.
Princess Diana joined the royal family in the 80s by marrying Prince Charles and became the Princess of Wales. She was known for her rule-breaking personality as well as her kind heart. This provided …show more content…

The royal family has many protocols and expectations, with her breaking them leading the way for more recent customs. This especially shows through the women marrying into the royal family after her death following in some of her footsteps. She inspired women to have their truth, leading many people to admire her. “Her rise to international stardom as a philanthropist and glamorous icon was heavily rooted in her approachable demeanor, kindness, and rebellious spirit.” (Mittsunaga1). She was confident in her actions and she wanted to do what was right for her, not what anyone else thought. Antigone also stood her ground in what was right. Diana was influential and changed the norms within the royal family for future generations. The most impactful thing was her breaking the stigma around HIV research. “The image of her holding hands with HIV/AIDS. … It shattered the stigma, prejudice, and fear that surrounded HIV/AIDS in the early days,” (Mitssunaga 1). The queen was not a fan of her acts for a while, wishing she could promote something more pleasant. However, her action led to more research on HIV, ultimately helping more people. In contrast, Antigone committed an actual crime in her town, and she is very open and honest about her crime. “ I admit I did it. I won’t deny that.” (Sophocles 504). For her actions, she is imprisoned and sent to die. She committed crimes to do what was right, but this also is because of the time frame and location where the play takes place. Both wanted to do the right thing, just Diana didn’t need to commit crimes to show she wanted to be taken seriously, and help those around her.
