Ancient Greeks valued many principles such as intelligence, strength and glory. Odysseus represents these values of the Greeks in his own style. Odysseus is a Greek hero who fought in the Trojan War. The Trojan War was a war between the Greeks and Trojans. The war started because of the queen of Sparta being abducted. Thus the Greeks set out to retrieve the queen of Sparta. Odysseus was one of the prominent leaders in this war. His story was told throughout the Odyssey. The Odyssey is a Greek epic by Homer telling the story of Odysseus’ journey home after the war. Throughout the story Odysseus is shown to uphold the values of Greeks. One of the principles Greeks highly valued was intelligence. Throughout the Odyssey Odysseus shows that he is intelligent. In the Odyssey it says “Son of Laertes, versatile Odysseus after these years with me, you still desire your old home? Even so, I wish you well. Odysseus shows that he has strength mentally and physically. In the epic it states “Meanwhile I crouched with my drawn sword to keep the surging phantoms from the bloody pit” (1226, Homer). Here it is showing that Odysseus is couching over bloody pit with surging phantoms. A regular person would be scared out of their mind and flee as soon as possible no matter what. Saying this, this shows that Odysseus is mental strong. Another situation where Odysseus shows his strength is when he faces the cyclops “ Cyclops as more than natural force nevered them; straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye” (1219, Homer).
