Christian Gonzalez Gonzalez 1 World Literature 10 2 August 2015 The Odyssey Summer Reading Assignment Book I. 1. Where is Odysseus?
The Odyssey Many people deem Odysseus to be an archetype hero. But was he really? Sure, he won many wars, but did he show the characteristics that matter? No!
In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Another epic hero quality that helped Odysseus was help from Greek gods and goddesses. In part two of Homer’s Odyssey, Athena helped out Odysseus when he got back to his home land.
Odysseus's Adventure Odysseus is a wise and noble hero in “The Odyssey”. The hero ,Odysseus, was not always such an epic hero, but instead grew into one throughout his adventure to Troy and back to his home land Ithaca. He faced monsters that scared and lured him causing him to learn how to be a better person and an epic hero. When Odysseus did return back to Ithaca he was graced by a goddess, Athena, and had her on his side when he fought the suitors Odysseus learned throughout his adventure, from Troy to Ithaca, on how to be the best hero, an epic hero.
After Circe turned Odysseus’ men into pigs, they stayed on the island of Aeaea for the year to come. They indulged in all the luxuries she offered after they were returned to their original state. However, after a year’s stay, Odysseus, the son of Laertes, was informed that he had to go to the underworld to complete his mission, but to reach this destination, Odysseus was to set out on a arduous journey, a mission to make it to the River Styx, the entrance to the underworld, but simply getting to this river was an adventure in itself. “When young Dawn rose her fingers and caressed the soft morning sky, we sailed on and parted our ways with Circe, the Lustrous and Mystical One. I had sought to be amongst my faithful Penelope after all this
Odysseus finally returns home and comes to find that men are lining up for his wife’s hand, even though Odysseus is still alive. Odysseus is infuriated and gets his revenge on all the suitors. He kills Antinous first because he was ridiculing him and he was also the strongest of all the suitors. He shoots an arrow through his throat as Antinous is drinking some wine.
The Lost Hero(Leader) To live for a reason, is to life for a purpose. A purpose that can alter the chance of life. A purpose can drive a person to be the best they can be, to never give up, and to strive for the best. Shouldn’t leaders represent strength, great power, invincibility?
In the epic The Odyssey, the epic hero Odysseus shows many hero like traits, in my opinion the most important trait would be loyalty. Odysseus, the hero of The Odyssey, first shows the trait loyalty on the Land of the Lotus Eaters. Odysseus sends three of his best men to check out this island, but bad luck has them and they run into Lotus Eaters who are addicted to the Lotus Plant. The next they know is the three men become addicted also.
Source of Strength In both The Epic of Gilgamesh, translated by Andrew George, and The Odyssey translated by Stanley Lombardo, the royal protagonists are kings. In both, Gilgamesh and Odysseus are renowned kings who go on harsh journey’s being obstructed by the gods. Both are considered one of the strongest people of their times. Interestingly, Gilgamesh and Odysseus are reasonable different types of king, the former being more harsh.
In the Vignett The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros the main theme was that no matter what trials life throws at a person, one can always prevail in the end by sticking to who they truly are.. From the beginning of the novel, the main character, Esperanza, is eager to belong, whether that is to a group of people or in the beginning a house. When her parents do get a house it’s not what Esperanza had imagined it to be, it did not fit what she thought a dream house would be like. Her desire to get out of Mango Street and become someone is her ultimate driving force in this book. Going through several events like rape, sexual assault and even witnessing abusive behavior towards women in her neighborhood all of these things encourages her to do better for herself.
The concept of hero has been interpreted in many ways throughout the ages. Hero have gone from knights slaying dragons and rescuing the princess, to heroes who save the world with their supernatural-like powers, to a modern day hero who is someone who has noble qualities and is regarded as a role model. In the epic, The Odyssey, by Robert Fagles, the heroic Odysseus is a well known in Greek mythology. However, although Odysseus is the most respected, honorable hero of Greek mythology he is not a modern hero. A modern day hero is someone who puts their life on the line to save the lives of other innocent people.
The odyssey, an epic told by Homer in ancient greece, has many major themes following odysseus’s adventures. While Odysseus is sentenced to never return home after the Trojan War. He is overcoming challenges to return home to his wife penelope and his son Telemachus. Throughout the story major themes of loyalty, hospitality and vengeance are hidden within the plot. The story continues to show his heroic side with three major traits.
My father, Odysseus, has been out to war since I was a young boy and I have not seen him in 20 years. In consequence, I never had a peer to educate me. In addition, the suitors constantly abuse my mother and my father’s property in Ithaca. Therefore, I, Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, pledge to find if my father is dead or alive. Mentes came to Ithaca and came to greet me.
Do you think Odysseus is a hero? If yes why do you think so? I think he was an epic hero because he did many things to help his people. He, would do a lot of things he would do to defend his people and he would of died trying to die for them to. He sometimes almost gave up but he kept on trying until he went back home.
Love can and can’t always conquer the unique stressors of an interracial relationship because an interracial relationship can consist of strong love that is unbreakable but under some circumstances, love can 't conquer all relationships due to cultural barriers and society. Depending on the relationship that people are in, others around them may support it while others may not. Some children feel pressured to live up to the expectations of their culture by dating someone within the same race. However, if they feel secure about their relationship they would not let anything destruct their love.
