Imagine making a ten-year voyage back to your homeland after already being away from family for ten-years while you were fighting in a war. This was the life of Odysseus in the play titled “The Odyssey”, by Homer. In this play, Odysseus wants to return home to his family, but he faces many obstacles that slow him down along the way, so he comes up with ways to overcome these struggles then eventually returns home. Odysseus is a hero because he completed the goal that was set, no matter how long it took him. In Homer's, “The Odyssey” the author composes a section called “The Lotus Eaters”, in which Odysseus’ ship is blown off course by a strong storm and he is taken to an island in which the native people there eat a plant called the Lotus. This plant makes the men lose all judgment and they do not want to return home on the boat. Soon enough, Odysseus has to break up this situation and force the men to follow his orders. In other words, the plant can be described as a drug that the men take and it makes them forget everything they value. Eventually Odysseus has to step in and be there to “cleanse” them by forcing them back on the ship. This relates to the world drug epidemic, because people will be going along and then something makes them spiral off course and some of them turn to the use of drugs to make them feel better. Drugs impair the judgement of those who take them and eventually an effort has to be “cleanse” them.
