What does being a hero mean? Being a hero means being brave, confident at times, having good leadership skills, willing to fight for their town, and smart every once in awhile. How does being a hero qualify to Odysseus? At times Odysseus can be a good man til he has to leave for war and a variety of things happen.
As Homer wrote The Odyssey, it all began when Odysseus was acting homesick not to go to war, but they knew he was faking so he had to go in the end. One of his stops was at the land where the Cyclops roamed. Odysseus was not smart at the time, but he thought he would stop and check it out. These flowers make you forget everything. Being the careless people that are his men started to eat the flowers, and then forgetting everything they were suppose to be doing at the moment and further on. This is when Odysseus started to become an actual leader by having to treat his men like they were cattle and leading them to the ship, so they can be on their way back home and not being consumed in by the Lotus Eaters. Also at this point he is down men, because of the Cyclops eating two men for breakfast and when he came home that day and saw his men sitting in the cave. Then Odysseus actually became a leader and tried to keep most of his men alive, so he wasn’t the only one making it home to their families.
In conclusion, how is Odysseus and being heroic all come together? It all comes together, because at times in part one of The Odyssey he can be a hero, but he also can be someone who doesn’t care about the situation he is in.
