According to Joseph Cambell.“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” In the epic poem, The Odyssey, one of the main characters, Odysseus, can relate to this quote because he gives up 20 years of his life to get back home. Odysseus saves many of his men, but also gets a lot of his men killed for his foolishness. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus shows he is a hero because of his strength, intelligence, and leadership. Odysseus Is a hero because he saves his men, which appears to be impossible to a normal man, showing his strength. Odysseus climbs a huge cliff with just his strength and his body, to save his men who were changed into pigs by a sorcerer named Circe. On page 1225, while Odysseus is climbing a cliff, when he is about to get to the top of the cliff, he gets help from a god.“On the way to Cerci, Odysseus meets the god Hermes, who gives him a magical plant called moly.” (Book 10). …show more content…

Odysseus is an intelligent hero because his men were trapped in a cave with a Cyclops. He did many clever things. On pg1220, he blinded the Cyclops, claiming that Odysseus hid his men under sheep and ram so they would not get noticed by the Cyclops. “I tied my man silently, tiger twining cordy of willow from the Orges and then slung a man under each middle sheep.” (Book9) Some people say that Odysseus is not a hero. People say in Book 22 that it is wrong that O Newport and his son Telecmes killed the suitors. That is not reasonable because the suitors trashed his home, tried to marry his wife, and tried to kill his son. They also drank Odesseous wine and ate his food.
