A hero is someone who is more intelligent than others, skilled at fighting, and confident. These traits help them defeat monsters by using clever plans, fighting skills, and the belief that they will succeed. For example, someone who fits these standards is Odysseus. He uses his intelligence to navigate possible problems and create plans. His fighting skills help him eliminate monsters or “bad guys''. Lastly, his confidence is what drives him to enter dangerous situations such as battling a monster because he believes that he will succeed. Odysseus kills Antinous and the suitors assume that he accidentally shot him. Odysseus reveals himself angrily and the suitors try to rush him in a desperate attempt to escape, “Run then, while I hold them off with arrows/ as long as the arrows last. When all are gone/ if I’m alone they can dislodge me./… While he had arrows/ he aimed and shot, and every shot brought down/ one of his huddling enemies./” (Homer 1512-1514, 1522-1524) The quote says that for every shot he took, he hit a target. Odysseus also displays being a skilled fighter during Penelope’s challenge to string and shoot his bow, “And Odysseus took his time,/ turning the bow, tapping it, every inch,/ for borings that termites might have made/ while the master of the weapon was abroad/…But the man skilled in all ways of contending,/ satisfied by the great bow’s look and heft,/ like a musician, like a harper, when/ with quiet hand upon his instrument/ he draws between his thumb and forefinger/ a sweet new string upon a peg: so effortlessly/ Odysseus in one motion strung the bow./ Then slid his right hand down the cord and plucked it,/ so the taut gut vibrating hummed and sang/ a swallow’s note./” (Homer 1359-1362, 1370-1379) He effortlessly strings the bow and shoots it perfectly at Antinous. Then Zeus thundered/ overhead, one loud crack for a sign./ And Odysseus laughed within him that the son/ of crooked-minded Cronus had flung that omen down/” (Homer 1082-1084,1379-1383) Odysseus believes in his ability to win the challenge and defeat the suitors. In the quote, we can see him laugh in confidence at his success. He also plans to kill the suitors with no hesitation. This shows us that he is very prideful and confident. As you can see, Odysseus’s pride proved to make him a hero because his confidence was also raised. This confidence helps him be sure of his ability to defeat monsters such as the Cyclops, the dead, Scylla and Charybdis, and the
