What do you think a hero is? A brave person? Or someone who is willing to risk everything to protect the people they love? The definition of a hero is quote on quote “ a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities”. In The Odyssey by Homer, it talks about a so called hero named Odysseus. He is a very important fictional character in Greek mythology, for he fought many monsters and l “defeated” many obstacles that went through his way. There he lived with his wife and his newborn child, Telemachus. It all starts with his first call to the Trojan war where the outcome is the Greeks victory. There was then another call to action after the Trojan war, but Odysseus fakes to be insane. He then meets with his mentor Athena who guides him to begin a quest. This is also the last reason why Odysseus is not a hero. He does not have a good heart like a great hero would have. After years of being gone and leaving his wife at her own will, many men were asking for the hand of Penelope. But Penelope set up a test for all of them, and if they were able to overcome the task they would be the great man to marry her. Of course the challenge wasn’t easy though, they had to pull the string of the bow of Odysseus and shoot the arrow through 12 small loops. When Odysseus came back home all the suitors were in the middle of trail and were still competing against each other. Odysseus being dramatic as he is, dressed up as a poor old man and faked to be someone else. He then grabbed the bow looking over it and soon after revealed who he was to all the men in the room. All the men were shook and tried to reason with Odysseus on why they shouldn’t be killed, but despite their pardons Odysseus kills all of them with no good heart as described in page 960, “He aimed and shot, and every shot brought down one of his buddling enemies.” A good hero would not have killed all the men just because they tried to marry his wife, but would forget about it and let them leave without being
