Odysseus: Heroism Essay

Odysseus, a name uttered in nearly each and every sentence, but one of the extensive controversies of all time revolves around our most cherished character of the most illustrious greek franchise, The Odyssey, by one of the most famous B.C. authors, Homer. The great puzzle, as described in layman's terms, would be is Odysseus a hero? Many people would argue that he is, those people are dead now, the remaining people state that he’s just an average guy who happens to be blessed by several ancient gods known to unfairly punish their subjects. When in reality he’s not trying to be rude nor hurt others, but is out purely for himself and his journey to re-obtain the love of his lost wife Penelope.

All the while displaying Odysseus’s goals and gains they never once go so far to describe the crew members within the books aside from a few lines of dialogue and the screams of their ever painful deaths to giants, sea monsters, and ship-splintering lightning bolts from the gods, their few lines of dialogue include,”We went up through the oak scrub where you sent us, Odysseus, glory of commanders, until we found a palace in a glade, a marble house on an open ground, and someone singing before her loom of chill, sweet song, godess or girl, we could not tell. However, it is important to take into effect the fact that these heroes that are discussed so often, are not real, therefore they are (to an extent) very linear to the readers, but the authors may have completely different perceptions that are lost because they cannot describe the way that these people are, or during the process of translation we lose the meaning of some of the ways that they are
