Strategic Planning Throughout The Odyssey Victory is not just caused by physical strength it's caused by strategic planning when surmounting your opponents. In The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus' strategic planning lets him overcome adversity and hardships throughout his odyssey home from the Trojan war. The main character in The Hunger Games, Peeta runs into a tough situation and has to fight off enemies with strategic planning. Peeta teams up with his enemies just to be able to survive the first couple of days in the games. Like this character, Odysseus has to use his strategic planning to overcome adversity. Circe advises Odysseus to “ let the men tie you in the legger, hand and foot, back to the mast, lashed to the mast, so you hear those harpy, thrilling voices'” (ln 673-675). Through the event Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis. Circe tells Odysseus to watch out for the sirens and make sure your men tie you up and don't let you go. Circe hopes Odysseus will use this strategy and many more. Circe makes it clear that Odysseus should “...hug the cliff of scylla, take your ship through on a racing stroke. Better to mourn six men then lose them all, and the ship too”(ln 704-706). Odysseus listens to Circe when given the option between Scylla and Charybdis. Penelope fights off the suitors by a challenge and brings out a bow that “...is my lord odysseus’ hunting bow. Bend and string it if you can. Who sends an arrow through iron ax-helve sockets twelve in line”(ln 1115-1118). Penelope takes out Odysseus’ bow and sees who is able to string his bow. Whoever strings it is her husband. Odysseus uses the test of the bow so it's easier to kill the suitors. His strategic planning once again helps him overcome adversity.
