In “A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men” by Thomas Scareth, the author’s purpose is to show the reader that Of Mice and Men is great tragic literature that provides the reader with many complex ideas through a simple story. One point Scareth makes is that sometimes tragedies are needed to show a positive about humanity when he says the story is,”but a tragedy in the classic Aristotelian/Shakespearean sense of showing humanity’s achievement of greatness through and in spite of defeat.” Scareth explains humans can do good things through seemingly bad things. Achievements can be made even through turmoil. I agree with this point because while George does something horrible, killing Lennie, it is done out of love and his need to protect him.
I believe keeping orcas in captivities is not humane .To keep orcas in a zoo for display is acceptable, but it is morally unacceptable to use them for entertainment at SeaWorld. I saw the film Blackfish and now, I resent SeaWorld. They care more about profit than animal welfare. Keeping these sentient animals in captivity for an extended period of time causes them severe psychological damage, as evidenced by several killer whale attacks on trainers.
Of Mice and Men is a novella, written by John E. Steinbeck, about two California men trying to keep afloat during the Great Depression. The two main characters, George and Lennie, had been partners for a long time and needed each other. Throughout the book Lennie asks George to tell him the story that he always tells, about how they were going purchase land for them to live together, and rabbits for Lennie to pet. But that never happened, unfortunately, as reality reared its ugly head. The most controversial subject in the book was George killing Lennie in the end.
Driven by the belief that space was bequeathed to them, the Native Americans feel justified in defending their land against the growing encroachment of the white man as the American landscape unfolds. Their motive is the premise that a higher authority has granted them the right to the space, and that the Great Spirit has created the landscape exclusively for them. Fueled by the formation of conflict over land, the Great Ottawa Chief, Pontiac, in his speech at Detroit, seeks to persuade the tribes, including the Ottawa, Huron, and Pottawatomi to agree to resistance. Invoking the words of the Delaware prophet, Neolin, Pontiac recounts the vision which he believes justifies resistance. Neolin urges the tribes to sever all relations to the customs
"A Teachable Good Book: Of mice and men" by Thomas Scarseth provides a unique angle to observe the themes in Of mice and men. He states that this story is that of a tragic one. Scarseth continues by giving examples of the uniqueness of the text, telling of the literary dissatisfaction people experience with tragic stories. He goes into depth about the personality and mannerisms of each character and why some conflict arises because of those personalities.
Of Mice and Men is primarily a book about two migrant workers, who jump from one job to another every now and again so they can survive everyday life. But to get into a little bit how the book goes starting off with the main characters. George and Lennie, face various situations where Lennie unpredictably and dangerously gets into problems that he can not get himself out of; which is where his partner George comes in who leads him in the correct direction. But unfortunately, as many know, all journeys must end sooner or later. That being said, Of Mice and Men depicts that all violence and mistakes in life are inescapable.
Of Mice and Men, is a story about two friends, George and Lennie. They both travel the countryside trying to find work. Lennie is big in size and has a mental disability, but George continues to stay with him. Even though in the story they find work on a farm, they get into some serious trouble. Throughout the text many themes present themselves, but the main themes are friendship, loneliness, and violence.
Of Mice and Men teaches valuable lessons about human interactions. An example is the lesson Crooks teaches by exposing the effects of loneliness caused by oppression. Lennie asks Crooks why he’s left out by the other works an Crooks replies, “Cause I’m black”(68). These lessons still apply to our world today since things like oppression caused by differences is still evident in our society. If we continue to read books like this, we may be able to use our wisdom to encourages others to do good deeds for our
i would like better lunch because they would and other students will agree because many waste up to 50 dollars a week and by changing to better food they can save that money for other stuff . and many would use the for other things for themselves because many people may get minimum wage. And other people don't even eat at all and they are hungry all the day but wont eat because they don't like the food and also they might feel light headed and their stomach might hurt. People are naturally biased, meaning they are uncomfortable with events that contradict societal norms. This shows very strongly in the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck where the story highlights Lennie who has special needs, and the controversy surrounding how he is being accused of raping a girl in Weed, the town they had to flee, and towards the end Lennie suffocates and kills Curley’s wife. While some critics contend that the novel Of Mice and Men does not exhibit the literary merit that the conclusion of the novel and the general rhetoric of the story elicits a complex discussion and does not end in a cliche. However, the novel Of Mice and Men definitively shows literary merit through the discussion of people with mental disabilities,
In “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, George made the right decision in shooting Lennie because Lennie did not know his own strength. Another reason is If George did not kill Lennie others would have killed him. However, the other side might argue that Lennie did not mean to kill Curley’s wife, thus he deserves to live. George should have killed Lennie because Lennie did not know his own strength, that is the reason why he killed many things by accident and caused many problems. “Why do you got to get killed?
In the gruesome short story “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allen Poe a nameless narrator tells his story of his drunken and moody life before he gets hung the next day. The intoxicated narrator kills his favorite cat, Pluto and his wife with an axe. Soon enough, the narrator gets caught and there he ends up, in jail. Although, most readers of “The Black Cat” have argued the narrators insanity, more evidence have shown that he is just a moody alcoholic with a lousy temper.
Unfortunately everyone has had to put down an animal at one point in their life, but is it acceptable to put down a fellow human? In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, as readers, we are faced with this question. Everyday thousands of animals are put down because there is no hope of them having a family to care for them, but can we ever truly justify putting down a fellow human being because they require special care? Unlike pets or other animals, humans possess the ability to communicate clearly with others and reason with them. In this book George, Lennie’s “friend”, ends Lennie’s life, only with no verbal warning to Lennie.
Of Mice and Men was certainly a great novel according to most critics. And I agree with them on the most part. Although, this book was confusing at first, it began to grow on me as I read. It isn’t like an unrealistic book where everyone is happy, it has tragedy here and there, and I’m happy about that. I learned a lot from a different perspective.
Lady and the Tiger Argumentative Essay “She knew in which of the two rooms that lay behind those doors stood the cage of the tiger, and which waited the lady.” Which did she choose? In Frank Stockton's short story, the Lady and the Tiger, the lovely princess loves deeply for a man, but now that her father has found out she is with a man in a lower social class, she had to witness her soul mate be sentenced to her father’s coliseum. The princess loves this man greatly, but she is scared that she would have to watch her lover being mauled by a tiger or fall in love with a woman that she deeply despises.
