She is constantly searching for her husband, hoping that she can turn “any of you boys seen Curley” into a conversation starter (38). In some cases it works, but she is usually quickly shut out. The only time she manages to get in more than a few words with the men is in the barn with Lennie, where Steinbeck reveals a side of her not seen elsewhere in the book. Throughout the rest of the story she is put together and composed, a mirage sent from Old Hollywood, but here she is blatantly upset, wondering “what’s the matter with me?”(43). A part of her shines through that isn’t usually seen.
Most people would describe me as strong and bulky, but sometimes I don’t realize how strong I really am. I never mean to hurt people or animals, I just enjoy touching them because they are soft and I love that feeling. When I do hurt things I always try hiding it from George because he doesn’t like me keeping dead animals. I was alone in the barn when Curley’s wife came in and tried talking to me. I was ordered by George not to talk to her, but she said that it was fine, that nobody would see us.

In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck Curley seeks revenge on Lennie and wants to Lynch him for ruining his reputation of being a tough guy. Curley is an angry, evil, little guy who is also the boss's son. Around the ranch he's known as being "pretty handy"(26). We see this part of his reputation demonstrated when he fights Lennie. When Lennie breaks Curley's hand, and Slim and the others blackmail him and tell him, "I think you got your han' caught in a machine.
Curley’s wife is not completely innocent, but she is not a villain. When she gets opportunity’s to show her true colors she is mean to the men on the ranch, which makes her at the least part villain. When Lennie is with Crooks and Cansy , she speaks to Crooks very rudely and says, “listen Nigger. You know what I can do to you if you open your trap”(Steinbeck 104)? Curley’s wife believes that she can take control and overpower Crooks.
Tart, Tramp, trouble, Bitch, are just some of the names given to Curley 's wife, who is never given a name in the entire book. But was she? Or was she just a lonely girl looking to have real conversations and to be noticed? In the article “I’m not a tart,” Meester, the actor who plays Curley’s wife on Broadway, has an interesting opinion to this girl without a name. She believes that “there is both a lack of reason to truly hate this woman, and the undeniable urge to do so.”
In society it is natural to judge someone when you first meet them, and sometimes it leads them to misperception. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck talks about George and Lennie, their journey through the Great Depression. The start of the book talks about how George and Lennie move from farm to farm looking for work and they find a new farm. At this farm they befriend a few of the workers there, but they all misperceive Lennie right away and see him as this weakling that cannot do anything really serious. Since in the end Lennie ends up killing Curley’s wife and no one expected it since he comes off more childish.

Curley’s wife’s playful dialogue establishes her as lonely and flirtatious, which directly contrasts Slim’s authoritative language that develops his influential and compassionate traits. Curley’s wife comes across as desperate and lonely from when she is first introduced. As soon as she walks in the door, she exclaims ‘“Oh!”
In John Steinbeck's novel "Of Mice and Men," Curley, the boss's son, is portrayed as an unpleasant character. From the very beginning, Curley's aggressive behaviour, confrontational attitude and his sense of entitlement due to being the bosses son makes him a disliked character among the other ranch workers. His abusive actions towards his wife, as well as his disrespectful and belittling behaviour towards the other characters, further adds to his negative portrayal in the novel. The story Of Mice and Men features characters George and Lennie working on a ranch trying to fulfill their dream. It is all brought to an end when Lennie is killed after he accidentally killed the wife curley who is the son of the man who runs the ranch. I do not believe that Curley’s wife was an antagonist, this is supported by nearly all of her very limited dialogue. In the book Of Mice and Men, the character of Curley's wife best captures the isolation felt by so many characters because she is the only woman on the ranch and her husband has forbidden everyone from talking to her, she really is the loneliest person on the ranch. First Steinbeck describes her as being pretty and flirtatious and emphasizes that she combats her loneliness by flirting with the ranch workers. “Her words tumbled out in a passion of communication, as though she hurried before her listener could be taken away” (88). In this line the word “tumbled” shows how quickly the words fall out of her mouth and how she doesn’t think twice before she talks. Curley’s wife has many unrealized dreams. Before her death, Curley’s wife confesses her desire to become a movie star, “Coulda been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes-all them nice clothes like they wear... An’ all them nice clothes like they wear. Because this guy says I was a natural.” p.89
Lennie behaves differently because he has a mental disability that handicaps him from being like others. Throughout the novel, his best friend George takes care of him by attempting to hide it from others. He wanted Lennie to assimilate into being normal, so he could be a normal man and live off on his own. Curley’s wife was also a character whom did not conform to normal societal ideals. Continuously, she walked around the farm to flirt with the men and earned herself the reputation of being a tart.
The characters in Of Mice and Men all have original and unique characteristics inside of them, but no matter how different, they all have the same reactions of giving up when thinking about dreams. The main characters George and Lennie, recently unemployed migrant workers, move to a new ranch for work. Thrown into a cruel, misshapen life that doesn’t end well for the majority of characters, George and Lennie find themselves in a dilemma that seems all too familiar. John Steinbeck uses the characters in Of Mice and Men to show that dreams are fragile and they need friends to support them.
She is the only girl on the ranch, and because of this, she faces difficulties from the boys. Curley’s Wife was just trying to find someone to confide in, and Lennie was there, but because she could cause trouble, Lennie wasn’t allowed to talk to her. She says to Lennie, “‘Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely’” (86).
