In Of Mice of Men, a novel written by John Steinback, George's decision to end Lennie's life was a difficult one, but ultimately the right one. Lennie, due to his mental disability, had a tendency to get into trouble and cause harm to himself and those around him. George, as Lennie's caretaker, was the only one who could take the necessary steps to protect Lennie from himself. George didn’t want Lennie to suffer a long painful death from being shot in the guts, or from being locked up in a cage being beaten by Curley and the farmhands, or perhaps suffer from loneliness from working on a ranch: “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. Loyalty is a character trait that is highly valued in a true friendship. In Of Mice and Men Lennie Small and George Milton show loyalty by traveling together in the Great Depression when this was a time period when people would often travel alone. Jobs were hard to come by during the Great Depression, and harder for people with disabilities. As a person with a disability, it is necessary for Lennie to follow George’s guidance throughout the story in order to be successful and fit into society. He needs George’s help with everything he does and will believe anything George tells him.
Relationships are key to the lives of many people. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie are very dependent on each other. Throughout the book, George sometimes gets frustrated with Lennie. Although their relationship can be difficult, George is definitely a father figure, or protector. George’s guidance and support for Lennie shows his love and compassion for his lifelong friend.
In Steinbeck’s novel “Of Mice and Men the main theme is Loneliness and Isolation. Steinbeck really creates an image in your head of the life of the migrated ranch men. He hides the fact the characters are isolated in the language he uses. The town that the ranch is close to is called “Soledad” which means loneliness in spanish. In latin “Solitaire” (the card game the men play) means alone and isolated.

In the novel, there were several characters who went through the loneliness of ranch life in the United States; a handless old man named Candy, a black crippled man named Crooks, and Curley’s wife. Candy faces loneliness and isolation after losing his dog, Crooks was forced to live away from the other workers because he was black, and Curley’s wife was the only female on the ranch, receiving no attention from anyone. Loneliness, in accordance with the dictionary is a complex and usually unpleasant emotional response to isolation or lack of companionship. However, it doesn’t always work like that, human beings can be lonely even when surrounded by other people, specifically if said other people cannot relate to or communicate effectively with the subject. In this way, many people can be lonely but not even seem lonely and that in itself is dreadful. Loneliness is dark bottomless hole that is just too easy to fall into and disappear forever. Steinbeck though, used this tactic of despair and sentenced the majority of his characters to life with it in his novel, Of Mice and Men.
First, loneliness is the sadness caused by having no friends or company, and friendship is a state of mutual trust and support between people, they are polar opposites, yet a person may acclaim to have both. For example today a person may have a friend, or many, but still will face loneliness in their life in one way or another. This is shown in Of Mice and Men periodically throughout the novel, knowing this the reader is challenged with such themes, the enticing beauty of friendship between George and Lennie, and the gloomy dreaded idea of loneliness shown by Curley’s wife, Candy, Crooks, and again Lennie. Among these characters the reader may also feel a connection between themselves and the characters, even though the world now and during the publication of Of Mice and Men has changed a lot. The world has reformed, and developed exponentially so, however friendship and loneliness is still a facet of everyday
Throughout Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George slowly starts to become more mind and accepting of Lennie in him life. Even though George’s attitude changes over the course of the novella, in ways his attitude stays the same. George may have started to be more kind towards Lennie and not want to let him go, but he still pittys him. He always feels sorrow and compassion for Lennie 's misfortunes. Though he has always helped him, he could never help him get over his mental illness.

The main ones are Crooks (the black stable hand), Candy (the old worker with his old dog), and Curley’s wife (who is ignored so that they do not get into trouble). Each of these characters have had lasting events that led them here.
