Because of our advanced technology that can keep people alive longer called life support people are being kept alive longer than humanly possible. Because of this the person being kept alive by the machines, though still living is not all there. They may seem alive, but they aren’t there in spirit. Day in and day out they go through constant pain and are humiliated by the fact that they can’t live without the machine attached to them. And because of this people find it harder and harder to “pull the plug” because when they do they have to say goodbye though it’s hard for them to overcome the lost of a loved one the person on the brink of death is relieved that the pain and humiliation can finally go away. Day in and day out they suffer pain and humiliation because of the fact that they can’t live without being connected to a complex machine. John Steinbeck the author of Of Mice and Men did a truly amazing job on showing the difficulties people go through when having to take care of someone with a disability and then later on having to choose whether to keep them alive or kill them taking them away their pain and humiliation. George one of the main characters of Of Mice and Men traveled around with his friend Lennie, who had a mental disorder Steinbeck does not specify what this disability is because at the time that the book took place they didn’t know what it was.
