Play Review A well written and capturing work full of friendship and hardships, is the Novella and play called Of Mice and Men. The play is an adaptation of the Novella by John Steinbeck. Both the Novella and the play were written by him. The director of the play is Mark Clements. The production I saw was on February 18th, 2016. The production company is Quadracci Powerhouse. The first production was in 1937, which featured the first African American Actor in the Actors Equity Association. The lighting/special effects consisted of Gunshots, Background lighting, the fire, the bloody glove, and spot lights. The three characters whose costumes stood out most were Curley’s wife, Lennie, and George. Set design, lighting/special effects, and costumes were three elements that were used through the entire play. Set design, lighting/special effects, and costumes added detail and helped the audience understand the time period and give a clearer understanding to what was going on. To start off with set design, It was very simple, but it added to the play. For example, the little pond in the beginning and the tree stumps made it seem a little woodsy without overdoing it. The bunkhouse and barn were the same way; wheels and other “gear” on the walls to set the scene better, but not too distracting. The only thing that was disappointing about was the “river”. It was a little too small. In the book, they described the river and the surrounding scene very elaborately and to portray it that small was disappointing.
