But what is the main theme of the novel that covers the whole story of Lennie Small and George Milton? Of Mice and Men took place in Salinas valley and the ranch in the novel is near Soledad which is located in the south-east of Salinas on the Salinas river. The ranch that Lennie Small and George Milton worked in held a temporary home for the ranch workers that worked there. Lennie and George travels around together to find a good job but since Lennie is mentally ill, it is a little difficult for George to move around. It contained mostly sacrifice just like John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. Many people lost many jobs and families during the tragic time period of the Great Depression. These affirmation demonstrates and shows the real meaning of sacrifice for others. Whether if it is friendships, relationships, or family, most people tend to sacrifice themselves to pursue other people’s happiness and to keep them satisfied. For George, it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t get what he deserves as long as Lennie is safe and taken care of. As long as he has Lennie and Lennie has him, nothing else matters. Sometimes, taking sacrifice for others’ happiness and to save a friendship or relationship to keep each other happy can be something that could hurt in the end.
