Theme essay-of mice and men “Of mice and men” is a book written by john steinbeck set in america during the great depression. The book is about 2 itinerant farm workers trying to get through the depression and make a life for themselves. In the book there are a few main themes and these are the loneliness of characters which leads to meanness and dreams which get destroyed. In the book there are many characters who are very lonely and can't get away from their loneliness. The book is so much about loneliness that even the small town the story is set in is called “soledad” this shows that even the place they live represents loneliness. Throughout the whole book most main characters have the same dream and it is to have a little ranch for themselves. At the start of the book only george and lennie have the dream but george knows something is going to go wrong as he says “if anything happens you come back here and hide in the brush” which shows he didn't actually think they were going to get the ranch. Candy makes the dream almost come true as he says he will pay for a lot of it if he can come along and live with them. This makes everyone think it's actually going to happen and means that when the dream gets destroyed that i will be even harder to get over. Crooks then wants to come along to the ranch with them and work just for his keep but his dreams get dashed almost instantly as just after he asks curley's wife says that she could get him lynched whenever she wanted which instantly makes him realise he doesn't belong anywhere and he then says to candy “forget it” which makes you feel awful for him as the one dream he had lasted for about ten minutes. The dream gets destroyed for candy, george and lennie when lennie kills curley's wife and lennie has to run away. This marks the end to all the dreams as george isn't going to go to the new ranch with just candy as it wouldn't be the
