Radiance of Tomorrow Essay Bockaire and his family survived horrors, that for many of us would only appear in nightmares. Throughout the book Radiance of Tomorrow by Ishmael Beah they overcome battles that include war and decreasing resources. They had to do everything they could to survive the hardships they had been put into. Backer was receive little to no pay for the work he was doing as a teacher, leaving him struggling to provide for his family. Along with the mining company coming into the village, Imperi, and ruining the resources and the atmosphere there, Bockaire had to make a change. The workers create any disruptions in the village, like raping the girls and partying at bars. During a large gathering, “One of the white workers…pissed all over the town hall” (page 77). This upset many of the elders because the town hall is where many of them gathered. The utter disrespect for the people who lived in Imperi had almost everyone is disgust. The mining company also ruined many resources in the the village by their construction. One of theses resources was the water. One of the children found, “The water was completely dirty and murky, and it smelled rusty” (page 108). This left much of the water undrinkable or very disgusting, leaving Imperi’s people in an even worse situation. Everything in the village continued to go downhill. This left the people with very few options, one of them included moving out of Imperi. Moving to Freetown gave Bockaire and his family more jobs to chose from. The larger selection of jobs gave them a better chance of being hired for a job that would support their family. When first moving to Freetown, “She also had a newspaper on the table and… was underlining ads for work” (page 197). In Imperi, there would never been such a pleasure. Though it is not aways the best job, it was better than nothing. While water and resources were being ruined in Imperi, they were blooming in Freetown. During the first couple days there was, “A man[that] went by carrying six bags of rice…stacked on top of one another” (page 190). The children were amazed by the amount of rice the man was carrying and questioned how could he carry so much. After such long time of minimal food in their stomachs at night and dirty water, it was nice to know these resources are available for once Bockaire’s family is able to start making money and providing for
