In the novel Okay for Now I picked the a quote that was said towards the beginning of the book on page 47 by the character, Mrs. Windermere. She asks the main character Doug if he knows what creativity is. He replies that he is not sure. Then Mrs. Windermere says: “Creativity is a god who comes only when he pleases, it isn’t very often. But when he does come, he sits beside my desk and folds his wings and I offer him whatever he wants in exchange he lets me type all sorts of things…” What Mrs.Windermere is trying to say in this quote is that creativity is something that comes and goes. In the beginning of the quote is states: “Creativity is a god who comes only when he pleases, it isn’t very often.” Unlike Mrs. Windermere, I don’t believe that creativity is a god of any sort. But she is right where she says creativity “comes only when he pleases, it isn't very often”. No one is creative all the time and sometimes it is very hard to be creative. Everyone's mind blanks at one point or another. I personally experienced a lack of creativity while writing this paper. After in the quote it says, “But when he does come, he sits beside my desk and folds his wings and I offer him whatever he wants in exchange he lets me type all sorts of things.” This next line is important also because it is very true. Doug throughout his life has a lot of negative things thrown at him. First in the beginning of the book, his prize position Joe Pepitone’s baseball cap that was given to him from Joe Pepitone himself gets thrown in the gutter by bullies in his school. Then we find out that Doug does not have a good relationship with his older brother Christopher. After we learn that Doug also has an abusive relationship with his dad and there is a lot of sadness and depression between his family in the household. While this is all happening Doug is being forced to move to a town that he knows no one in and does not want to move there. At first when he moves, Doug is very negative about the situation. But eventually finds a way to be positive. While this is all happening, Doug is sometimes negative in his thoughts about his situations but is a respectful child to his mother and father. Doug is shown to be an optimistic character throughout the book while negative things were being thrown at him. At the end Doug finds a way to be positive and kind to
