The words “Old Man” are seen everywhere; from books, to movies, to everyday routines. But what might old man symbolize in literature? The “Old Man” is regarded as the age-old wisdom of humanity, the overbearing knowledge being beared by one individual with a substantial amount of life experience.

DiMaggio was stationed at Santa Ana Air Base in California. From 1946 to 1951, DiMaggio didn’t play a full season due to repeated injuries,“heel spurs and assorted ailments took their toll” (The Yankee Clipper 107). DiMaggio suffered from bone spurs at the same time a character in one of Hemingway's stories suffered the same, but they both persevered. He left the game early because he claimed he was no longer Joe DiMaggio, as he was not the exceptional player he used to be.
