We all must learn to write and to write efficiently. The purpose of writing is to either entertain, inform and or persuade. All forms of writing, whether it is stored in a personal archive or submitted for the public it is always necessary for writers to improve their skills. The text On Writing Well by William Zinseer, as well as readings from class, help define what makes a writing piece superior. High quality writing of all kinds must acquire these things: Outside sources that compliments or reinforce the author’s point, style, and all great writing must have a flawless beginning and end.

Quotes is a tool that can reinforce and or compliment the author’s point. Nancy Mairs begins On Being Cripple with a quote that states “To escape is nothing. Not to escape is nothing. --Louise Bogan”. Not only does this quote require assessment, it leads readers to guess what Mairs paper could be about. Sources other than the writers own should be managed and kept at a minimal. It is an important art which evokes emotions and is intended for readers to grow in knowledge and development. Every superior writing piece has a particular style. William Zinseer believes that you cannot teach style, “style is organic to the person doing the writing, as much a part of him (or her) and his hair…” It is true one cannot teach style, but Kurt Vonnegut states several steps that transcends personal style to a writer’s work, in his article, “How to Write in Style”. Meaning what you say and sounding like yourself are few points that Vonnegut makes that can improving a writer’s style. Style is what sets a writer apart from others- it is the personal touches in a piece that make the author and individual.
