The word “silence” in the last line of the stanza is also a reference to death, but the speaker is not concerned because she has “fingers”, or memories to “caress her into silence”. The last stanza is the longest because the speaker has many hopes for future generations. She aspires for her future generations to adore the century quilt, just as she does. The speaker reminisces on past events from her childhood and grandmother to exemplify the memories she hopes her descendents will experience just as she did. The memories were told with great imagery and detail.
The syntax of Elisabeth Bishop's One Art moves from careless movement to doubt and finally to emotional loss. Bishop's repetition of the phrase "the art of losing isn't hard to master" proves how complacent she is with losing objects in her life. Her use of simple sentences, phrases, and semicolons provide closure as she soon begins seemingly (almost as if she is abandoning them) losing items. Her use of the dash in the last stanza creates a shift in the tone, which is almost like her break down after an emotional toll. Through out the entire piece, Bishop's constant use of repetition, commas (which show her constant series of losing items means little to her) and her unusual use of a four line stanza in a villanelle, changes the flow
(lines 3 and 4) it shows that time is carrying us until our lovers meet, the up until now. The poem goes on to say, “Personal events will become interesting again,” (line 5) and gives more examples in the following lives of how love can brighten our lives again. When lovers separate, it becomes a matter of time again. The line, “The desolation of lovers is the same: that enormous emptiness carved out of such tiny beings as we are ask to be filled; the need for the new love is faithfulness to the old.” (lines 11- 15) relates in this idea that the separation of lovers is the same as our individual emptiness asking to be filled, that we must stay true to the old for new things in our life.
This is a very simple yet emotional poem. The poet, Pat Mora, incorporates the motif of loss and stresses the inevitability of it. Through her narrative poem, she provides a sense of reality on how one may approach the loss of a spouse from old age. Although this poem is concise, it is greatly impactful, and I could visualize the grief.
This poem makes one consider if they have any control over their own life. Also brings up the idea of the life someone is born into and how it is connected to one's ultimate fate. Sometimes, we want something to happen so bad, that we don't consider how our life might change if this wish, this hope of something, actually happened. We sometimes may want something so bad, but fear what the consequences might be if something goes
This poem has an apparent rhyme scheme. The last word in each line rhymes with the last word in the line directly under it. This lets the reader almost sing through the poem. There is a very nonchalant tone and feel to the poem. The lack of detail in the poem lets the readers imagination create the situation in which the person dies.

In the six poems in which I studied by this poet, we can see how Bishop used the languages to her advantage in a way that helped the reader to uncover the intensity of feeling in her work. We can see the emotions in her poetry through a mix of language types and techniques within "The Fish", "The Prodigal", “In the Filling Station", "In the Waiting Room", "Sestina" and "First Death in Nova Scotia". Through descriptive detail, use of metaphor, simile, and many other excellently executed stylistic devices, the reader can almost feel the emotion being conveyed.
