The Origins of Madness in One Who Flew Off The Cuckoo's Nest The book, One who Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey, is an eccentric story on the cruel treatment of patients within psychiatric wards in the 1960s. It is told from the narration of an indigenous man, named Chief Bromden, a character who is deeply conflicted and wounded inside, as he narrates the story of another patient McMurphy. McMurphy is not like Chief, nor any of the other patients for that matter, for he is a man who refuses to follow the wards rules and does whatever it takes in the book to strip the head nurse, Miss Ratched, of her power, in a fight for the patients, sovereignty within the ward. His rebellious attitude unfolds and the consequences begin unveiling
Throughout the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, a psychoanalysis is made through the character, McMurphy. There are several things you can infer from McMurphy through his speech and actions. McMurphy instantly perceives himself to be something he is not. When he first walks into the ward he says, “Since I'm thinking about taking over this whole show myself...maybe I better talk with the top man,” (19). Typically when someone is introduced to a new place, they are hesitant on how to respond.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a film that can change your perspectives. Randle McMurphy’s side of this story is truly inspiring by the way he made the others feel about themselves. McMurphy lied and pretended to be crazy but rather that he is trying to manipulate the system in his advantage. He thought that being in the mental hospital would be more comfortable than going back to his normal life, he was serving a sit month sentence in prison, which haunts him later when he discovers the power of Nurse Matched manipulates him over so that she can send him for electroshock treatments and keep him committed as long as she likes. However, from what we see McMurphy is not a bad person as the nurse think he is.
In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, written by Ken Kesey, Randle McMurphy, a new patient, plans to take control over the ward and seize power from the strict and manipulative Nurse Ratched. Upon his arrival the patients begin to feel comfortable around McMurphy. He acts as a savior, standing up for himself and for the rest of the patients against Nurse Ratched. Despite the ward being a dismal and limited place, the presence of McMurphy's leadership gives the patients encouragement, individuality, and freedom.
Randle P. McMurphy represents freedom, life, joy, and hope to the patients in Big Nurse's ward. He comes from the Outside, loud, seemingly perfectly sane, and wreaks havoc on the orderly world imposed on the patients. As Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest progresses, McMurphy displays the power of the individual against a repressive establishment. He brings many of the patients in the ward that were self-admitted to the hospital full swing, showing them what life can be like outside of the ward. Chief Bromden, Harding, and even Billy Bibbit end the novel as completely changed men.
After some time, McMurphy realizes how Nurse Ratched is in control of the patients and if any patients get out of hand or questions something, Nurse Ratched immediately shut the patients down. In one scene, Nurse Ratched sends McMurphy and two other patients to be given the ECT treatment when McMurphy and some other patients sneaked out for a fishing trip. McMurphy is trying to get the patients who voluntary are in the institution to experience how wonderful life is and not to fear the “real world.” The institution has kept McMurphy in the mental institution to keep a close eye on what mental conditions he may have for being sent there. Therefore, McMurphy has not been officially diagnosed as mentally unstable and yet he was given the ECT treatment.
R.P. McMurphy exemplifies a modern day tragic hero in Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. McMurphy follows the traditional outline of a tragic hero in that he has a fatal flaw, a reversal of fortune due to this flaw, and experiences his own downfall due to his fatal flaw. R.P. McMurphy’s biggest flaw was his insubordination. McMurphy’s insubordination was exemplified when he first arrived on the ward, and demanded to see the “bull goose loony.”
In the drama film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo 's Nest, Patrick McMurphy was moved from a prison farm to a mental institution to get evaluated for his erratic behavior. Upon being transported to the institution, all his assumptions about his new home were completely wrong. The head nurse, Nurse Ratched, has the whole hospital under her control with little to no freedom for the patients. All the inmates at the institution go through rigorous training to become obedient to Nurse Ratched and her strict schedule and rules. The institution was a very controlled environment with the patients having no control over their own life’s while there.
In the movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, we see various types of psychological events at work in the Oregon psychiatric hospital. We see phenomenons like attitudes, conformity, obedience and more in the actions of the patients and even nurses of this hospital. One of the biggest themes in this movie is that of conformity or even nonconformity, which is exemplified in the hot-headed lady's man, R.P. McMurphy. Through his interactions with the other patients, guards, and nurses, we see a change in everyone around him as well as some personal changes in Mac himself. I will plan to address these phenomenons and use examples from the movie.
All of McMurphy violent behavior was for the men to better themselves. He prepared them for real world outside of the ward. He helped them not to get pushed around and to not be afraid to do what they want. Mcmurphy’s madness is made reasonable as it provided the patients with hope and helped them return to a sane lifestyle. By the end, McMurphy managed to release many of the patients to their normal senses, Even though it caused him to lose his freedom.

The first time he is asked about his mental state he is very upbeat, joking, and has a lot of questions. After being institutionalized for sometime he begins to act differently and less like himself. He becomes quieter and more reserved although not completely losing himself quite yet. McMurphy fits in quickly with the other patients but has a hard time adjusting to the schedule.
In the book “One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest” Ken Kesey shows that the “insanity” of the patients is really just normal insecurities and their label as insane by society is immoral. This appears in the book concerning Billy Bibbits problem with his mom, Harding's problems with his wife, and that the patients are in the ward
McMurphy arrives to the ward thinking he is different from the other patients on the ward, but throughout the novel his hidden subconscious thoughts of his true mental state are revealed. While introducing himself to the patients, McMurphy tells the background story of how he ended up where he was. He says that the “court ruled that [he’s] a psychopath” (13), and he didn’t argue with that ruling. Although he doesn’t deny that he belongs on a mental ward, he claims that he only acted the way he did to leave “those damned pea fields” (13) and quit working. Because he is a true gambler at heart, he bets the patients that he can get under Nurse Ratched’s skin and shake up things on the ward.
At the end, the protagonist is surgically operated to make him mentally deranged. The nurse and the department were certain that McMurphy was faking insanity, but they agreed that he was dangerous. The nurse, in spite of discharging him, kept him on the premises to undo the wave of excitement he brought to the asylum
