Studies show that teens who open social media more than three times a day are more at risk for mental health issues. The novel One of us is Lying by Karen M. McManus is about five Bayview High School students who are given detention, but only four make it out alive. Bronwyn, Nate, Addy, and Cooper become suspects after Simon’s fatal allergic reaction. They all become persons of interest in Simon’s murder because he had queued posts about them on his gossip app called “About That”. Lies and rumors begin to unfold throughout the investigation, but the four stick together and resolve that Simon organized his death, with the help of Addy’s ex-boyfriend, Jake. Simon wants to be popular and disciplines those who do not accept him. Simon has a talent for exposing people’s secrets daily. He uses his power to reveal private/confidential information about those who make him feel miserable. Bronwyn reads “A sex tape. A pregnancy scare. Two cheating scandals. And that's just this week's update,” then thinks to herself, “if you all knew Bayview High was Simon Kellecher’s gossip app, you’d wonder how anyone found time to go to class” (McManus 3). Bayview High is run by the gossip app “About That” which is run by the class outcast Simon Kellecher. The Bayview students live in anxiety that they are going to be posted next. Addy, Bronwyn, Cooper, and Nate are suspects in Simon’s murder. They have undergone many investigations and are receiving a lot of attention from the media. Cooper and Nate are being worshiped on the internet because they are men, while Addy and Bronwyn are being vilified because they are women. Addy believes that “sexism is alive and well in true-crime coverage because Bronwyn and I aren’t nearly as popular with the general public as Cooper and Nate. Especially Nate. All the tween girls posting about us on social media love him. They couldn’t care less that he’s a convicted drug dealer, because he’s got dreamy eyes” (McManus 187). The general public is overlooking Addy and Bronwyn because the media has a history of glorifying men and negatively portraying women. Also, Addy is negatively affected by this because she was raised to learn that she only has worth if people find her attractive.
