As I walked into the cafeteria, I caught a whiff of the food being prepared in the cafeteria and thought to myself, “Why can’t we go off-campus to get lunch?” While SLA, the lunch program at Catholic High, provides the school lunches, there could be an alternative solution to this. Unfortunately, students are detained at school during lunch hours and are not able to leave campus during lunch forcing them to be served by SLA or bring their own lunch. If Catholic High School were to introduce an open-campus lunch, students and faculty would benefit greatly. While SLA does provide the lunch at CHS, they do not live up to their standard of “high quality, nutritious, and cost efficient”.
In Derek Bok’s, Protecting Freedom of Expression On The Campus, he brings light to the issue of censorship in universities. He states that students at Harvard University got offended after a few students displayed the confederate flag. There have been many cases in which people have tried to censor offensive material however; the Supreme Court preferred to conserve the freedom of expression. He believes that if censorship starts to take place, it will be difficult to know when to cross the line. In addition, it will not fix the initial problem since the offenders will continue to abuse others using different means.
Anne Neal, the president and co-founder of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, brought up many great points in her speech on academic freedom. If we do not begin to allow the proper learning and teaching techniques, our society will begin to suffer. Academic freedom is in the decline in today’s society and Anne Neal wants to make a difference. Recently speakers have been backing out of their speeches because of student protests. Campuses are giving speakers speech codes with extremely broad rules.
The increase of police officer or SROs diminish the school 's’ efforts to develop academically engage youths because the SRO demoralizes the students by criminalizing them for minor offence. “The presence of police officers has increased student arrests on school grounds between 300 and 500% annually since the establishment of the zero tolerance policy” (Mallett 2015). Mallet’s findings illustrate that with more security on campus students are arrested more often for minor issues because the youths have a higher chance of being caught. Therefore, SROs are inefficient and cannot provide a nurturing, learning environment for students because the SROs establish a prison like environment (Mallet 2015). On a more serious note, many students complained that between classes and work, there was no time to enjoy the activities available on campus. Additionally, students felt that the administration did not care for them or consider their interests. The stresses and strains that are put on young adults today is getting out of hand. Between the work that school demands from students to the cost it takes to put one self through school is unreasonable. The dignity of students is at stake. Students are not only stressed and constantly worried about the work it takes to pass classes and graduate, but they are also stressed with the cost it takes to simply stay enrolled in their field of study if they are in college or maintain a scholarship. With the great power of education comes great responsibility.
Sacrificing their individuality and creativity is just a step in the right direction towards their version of success. Even though sacricinfing one’s true self is great, they are willing to do so if it brings them profit in their own lives. Ultimately, the selfish need for success outweighs the corruption and negativity it brings to the overall system, and in that respect, restricts itself from progressing towards change. Because a generic system like a college can not cater to every individual, there are always concrete flaws, one of which is the pressure to confrom.
In 2007, there was a shooting at Virginia Tech University, leading to thirty-three people were killed and fifteen were wounded. Many of the victims were students and shot in dorm and a classroom building. The murderer was senior-level undergraduate student. He was diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorders known as selective autism and major depressive disorders. Most people do not know what guns can cause the world.
During lunchtime, students generally make their way through the crowded cafeteria to sit with their friends, and enjoy their lunch while being supervised; however, many schools are now authorizing students to have an open campus lunchtime. An open campus allows students to leave school campus unsupervised to have lunch or hang out at a local restaurant or business. Having an open campus is beneficial because it allows students to gain independence, responsibility, trust, the health of students, socialize with friends, and help increase business at local restaurants. Therefore, I believe Arapahoe should continue to have an open campus for the benefit of our students. Having an open campus allows students to leave the school grounds to have lunch outside and be able to socialize with their peers.
Parents feel that guns should be allowed on campus so that students and staff can protect themselves in dangerous situations and also by being an American citizen it is one of our Constitutional rights. Guns should be allowed on college campuses because they provide better safety for students, the second amendment, and when requirements for carrying a weapon are in place. The Second Amendment is the right to bear all arms. “Activities for conceal and carry laws on college and university campuses read the Second Amendment as an overarching right to have weapons, regardless of location.”
Open campus at lunch time is a huge advantage for high school students, and is a great punishment as well. The student's responsibility to come back to school on time will have consequences if students don't follow it. This will help them realize that the word is run by rules and if people don't follow them, there will always have consequences. Students will be gaining responsibility for collage and the real world after that. To succeed in life people need independence, maturity, and responsibility.
