Opening Statement for The Jury Hello Jury. My name is Jacob Oldakowski and it is my pleasure to stand here today and represent Maycomb County as the prosecutor on this case. On the day of the legal case between Mr. Tom Robinson and Ms. Mayella Ewell, the jury of that case performed juror conduct. I believe the reason they didn’t do their job is because they acted on their emotions that Mr. Robinson was black and that Ms. Ewell was white and not the fact of the case. Members of the jury the county will review the evidence against the past jury who so wrongfully prosecuted someone based on the color of their skin rather than the facts of that night. “‘The right side Mr. Finch but she had more bruises’” (Lee 192). That was a statement in the past jury case taken by Sheriff Heck Tate. “‘There were definite finger marks around …show more content…
Ewell’” (Lee 201). A statement made by the judge to the witness, Mr. Robert Ewell. “‘Who beat you up? Tom Robinson or your father?’ No answer” (Lee 213). This is Atticus asking Mayella about her assault. “Tom Robinson reached around, ran his fingers under his left arm and lifted it to the bible and his left arm sought contact with the black binding as he raised his right hand the useless one slipped off the bible” (Lee 216). The jury is guilty because they failed to follow the facts but instead listened to emotions costing a man his life. The defense will probably state that the the jury members are innocent because Mr. Robinson was convicted of a crime previously meaning he could do this one aswell however that was a 30 day misdemeanor not charges of assault and sexual harassment. They may also say that Tom was alone with Mayella, making him a prime suspect. Well yes he was but so was Mr. Ewell which would also make him suspicious. Another statement they could bring up is that Mr. Robinson ran. I respond with yes he did, though he said he ran because he was scared that he’d have to go to court for something he didn’t
