The Trial (jury member) Today was the day of Tom Robinson's trial. From what we the jury were told it was simply a black man against a white man. So at first I figured this wouldn’t take long. The case was about a black man being accused of bearing and taking advantage of a white woman. First up to the stand was the sheriff, so I figured what he said would be reliable, unless he was lied to. His story was that Mr.Bob Ewell called him up and said that a black man was taking advantage of his daughter. He said that her right eye was bruised and her face was beaten. Up next was Mr.Ewell himself. His story was that he was getting wood when he heard screaming from his house. So he ran there, chased Tom Robinson off the property then called the sheriff. Next up was the girl herself, Mayella Ewell. She stated that she asked Tom to cut up a chiffarobe, he did then she said he attacked her. This was the first time she let him into the house. She said she fought tooth and nail, screaming and kicking. This was how she got the bruises on her body. Her dad gets a little too drunk most of the time and she admitted to him beating her, which could explain her bruises. To me Bob seems suspicious but we have to take a white man’s word against a black man’s. When Tom came onto the stand, his story was different from everyones. He said he had been to her place many times doing odd jobs to help her out. None of the other children on the property helped her, so he figured he would be nice. The one day she asked him to fix a door inside but said door wasn’t even broken. She then had him get something on the top of a tall chiffarobe. So he stood on a chair to get it when she came after him. She grabbed his legs and kept trying to kiss him, saying what her daddy did didn;t count.
