Analgesics can be used to treat a wide range of pain. A three- step plan for prescribing pain relievers was developed by The World Health Organization which lists what medications to use depending on the intensity of pain experienced. Step one states that for mild pain, nonopioid and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be used. Pain relievers such as acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol, Tempra) are non-narcotics. In addition, ibuprofen or aspirin (e.g. Motrin, Advil) are nonsteroidal medicines that can be taken to relieve mild pain. Step two, for moderate pain, expresses that mild opioid analgesics would be given. The synthetic narcotics can be consumed with or without a nonopioid drug.
