England wanted to trade with China. Unfortunately China did not want anything that England had to offer. The english owned parcels of land that grew poppy plants which is what Opium is made out of. England tried to use opium as a tradeable product. Once China would eventually get hooked they could manipulate China to trade with them. England obtained port cities in China through this method. China realized that they had to fight back since the opium was tearing their empire apart, so the government decided to attack England’s trading ships which began the Opium War. England and India had a company called the East Indian Company which traded tea. England did not just want to own the product, they wanted to own the land so that they had full control over the

England began to annex India starting with cities such as Bombay and Calcutta. England understood that they could not rule India without some help from inside. They decided to hire private Indian soldiers called Sepoys that were either Muslim or Hindu to protect the product/store. When they realized that the British were giving them guns with bullets cased in beef/pork they became enraged and began a rebellion against the English. This revolt spread like wildfire throughout India, but they never stood a chance since the British outnumbered the Indians. The British then sent a message to all of their colonized nations by strapping captured Sepoys onto a cannon and rupturing them up instead of just hanging them for treason.
