Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi and was born from an unmarried young couple. Her name was originally Orpah, but all the people called her Oprah so she kept this name. Also, her name was misspelled on her birth certificate so that is another reason why she has been called Oprah ever since. Oprah was raised by her paternal grandmother named Hattie Mae, in rural Mississippi on a farm without running water, and Oprah was taught how to read at the age of three mostly from studying the Bible. She then moved to her mother’s house in Milwaukee, and she turned to drugs while suffering from sexual harassment since her mother would never give her the attention a parent should give to a child. This made The Oprah Winfrey show meaningful and brought more attention, since people enjoy listening to what others have to say and how they have persevered through the tough times in their lives. The show is rated number one, since people can relate to these real world problems and could learn how to better their lives as well by listening to the show. The talk show was watched in over 130 countries worldwide such as Singapore, Bangladesh, and Mongolia. Over 10 million people watched her show on a daily basis. Oprah’s show made 125 million dollars the first year and her income was 30 million dollars. It is amazing how far she had come from living on a farm with her grandmother with no running water to having the most watched show in the country. Since it was the most successful talk show in the world, Oprah accepted a deal that would extend the show to be broadcasted for twenty-five more
