In 1864 Congress approved the Northern Pacific Railway to be built. The NPR is the first transcontinental railroad in the northern part of the country. It is 8,316 miles long, beginning in Minnesota and ending in Washington state, with many branches going off the main line. When congress approved it they also supplied nearly 40million acres of land grants to build the railroad on. Construction didn 't go underway until 1870, and the rail road was finally christened to open on Sept. 8 1888.
Florence Kelley (1859-1932), daughter of William and Caroline Kelley, was a successful women. She lived during the time of the Orphan Train Movement which lasted from 1854 to 1929. The Orphan Train Movement relocated homeless and abandoned children living on the streets of New York City to new homes in the United States. Some children were put into homes where they prospered but unfortunately some children were put into homes where they were treated like slaves and abused. Although Florence was alive at the time the orphan train ran there is no know information about how she actually responded to the movement.
First the agents put up notices in towns along the railroad announcing the time and date that a trainload of children would be arriving. A CAS (Children's Aid Society) agent selected a group of people to choose parents for the children. This group usually included a doctor, a teacher, a business owner, a minister, and a newspaper reporter. Once the train arrived in the towns the children were cleaned up first. “When the children were near a stop they changed their clothes and washed their face.
Transcontinential Railroad had a huge impact on the Native Ameriacans, Society and the Environment. Here is one example of how the Native Americans were impacted: Some of the hardships they faced were very little food, only ate once during their working hours. They worked long hours for very little money, and they had ages 10 and up working. Transcontinential Railroad helped the society grow with the transportation it provided. It replaced wagon trains of previous decades which became usless.

As a kid growing up there are encounters that change your perspectives on life and what you need to fulfill in life. Luckily growing up for me was never what some would state a battle. I experienced childhood in a white collar class group of five in the residential community of Mercedes, Tx. As a kid living around there of texas known as the Rio Grande Valley you start to see the battles other individuals look in the group and You end up noticeably appreciative for the things you do have.

There were many challenges in building it, but after it was finished, it connected the East Coast of the United States to the West Coast. The railroad took three whole years to build, with the help of two railroad companies and thousands of other hired workers.

Christina Baker Kline is an American novelist, editor , and nonfiction writer. She is a graduate of Yale, Cambridge, and the University of Virginia, where she was a Horns Fellow in Fiction Writing. In addition to Orphan Train, her novels include, Sweet Water, Bird in Hand, Desire Lines, and The Way Life Should Be. As of yet she hasn’t received any awards. Kline’s husband, who is a Midwesterner, inspired her to write Orphan Train.
There has always been a way for children to be cared for in the United States. In the early 1800s orphan asylums were the most popular way for homeless children to be taken care of. Then institutional care came around, where children were taught to grow up as quickly as possible. Placing-out was then created in the 1850s to use instead of the institutions. This form of foster care sent children to the western states to live in rural homes.

There are many issues regarding the welfare of children from all over the world. Children have been repeatedly impacted by wars and conflicts in their countries. Moreover, many children from some areas do not have access to their rights such as education and health and have to suffer from discrimination, violence, abuse and sexual and economic exploitation. After the World War II, Children from all over Europe had to suffer the aftermath of the war. This is when the United Nations stepped in and created United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, or as today’s shorter term, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in December 1946 with the sole purpose to lessen the suffering by providing foods, clothing and health care.
