Oryx and Crake Debate
In Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, the character Crake is the hero of the story due to his action to rehabilitate humanity. Hero according to dictionary.com is a person noted for being courageous. Courageous being a person standing up against the evil. Crake stands up against the evils of society that is corrupted by corporations and the state of nature of humanity. Crake’s ideas parallels with Hobbes's idea of the state of nature of humans which states that humans are inherently malevolent. While Crake explain a scenario about HelthWyzer being deceitful, Crake explained to Jimmy,”not discovering[disease] ….They're creating them”(Atwood 211). Crake points out corporation are not helping people but plaguing them

This demonstrates a hero because in order for Crake to defeat the “evil” he must eliminate it and create a new path for humans to prosper. Crake may seem mysterious and emtioless, he isn’t stupid and he wants a better future for humanity. As Jimmy tries to figure out what was going on with Crake’s head after the plague rampaged throughout the human race, he thinks “ had he[Crake]….intellectually honorable man who'd thought of things through to their logical conclusion “(Atwood 343) This details that Crake knew the consequences of his action and his decision was fully thought out. Crake was not ending humanity but prolonging it which seems ironic however true. Crake knew the evils of humanity will inevitably be the downfall of human. For preserving humanity, Crake “alter ordinary human”(Atwood 303) so the inevitable downfall can be prevented and the humanity can still proliferate as long as they likes . The end of humans are necessary to ensure the Crakers can survive and prolong the genetic gene of humanity. The is heroic because it demonstrates Crake being courageous. He is willing to sacrifice all of science, all of the people he loves, and everything he knows to prolong the survival of humanity. On a bigger picture,
