Lab Report Osmosis is the movement of water in and out of cells. It is considered one of the types of passive transport. Passive transport is the movement of materials without using energy in and out of a cell. During osmosis, the size of the cell changes along with its volume of water. There are three types of solutions that can affect the movement of water. Hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic change the movement of water in and out of a cell. A hypertonic solution causes there to be more concentration in the cell and moves water out causing it to shrink. While, a hypotonic solution causes water to move into the cell, and the concentration decreases. Last but not least, an isotonic solution moves water in and out of the cell causing it to be equal on both sides. An egg is used to show osmosis on a bigger scale because it is similar to an actual cell. Therefore, osmosis is present in the lab through an egg and many solutions are added to show the movement of water in and out of the cell. To start, the egg had a hard shell and a white outer layer. In the beginning, the egg had a mass of 54.04g. Then, it was put into a solution of vinegar, and the shell dissolved after a few days. The egg’s …show more content…

The distilled water is a hypotonic solution since water moved into the egg. The water moved in because it moves into an area with less water from an area with more water. The water molecules are selectively permeable allowing them to easily go through, and the water likes to even out on both sides. The egg slowly expanded overnight as more water entered. The new mass is 81.8g and had an increase of 39.71g. The appearance of the egg is very similar to the one that had a vinegar solution. It had a yellow-brownish color, felt soft and squishy, and expanded causing it to be full of water. Overall, the distilled water is another hypotonic solution that caused the water to enter the cell and expand to a larger
