“Barbie Doll” was written by Marge Piercy. While Othello, Act V: II, Othello’s final speech, was written by Williams Shakespeare. The theme of “Barbie Doll” is that the only way to fit into society is to be perfect like a Barbie doll. Throughout the poem, you see how the theme plays a role in how the poem ends. While the theme of Othello has three parts, racial prejudice, manipulation, and jealousy. Throughout the play of Othello, you see how all three parts of the theme play a major role. “In the casket displayed on satin she lay with the undertaker’s cosmetics painted on…. Doesn’t she look pretty? Everyone said.” When you read the last stanza of the poem, one of the ways you imagined what happened after the protagonist snapped is that she committed suicide. The stanza is talking about how she is laying in the casket, everyone is looking at her and they made her look perfect because of that everyone is commenting on how pretty she looks. Another way this can be looked at is that she got plastic surgery. From this surgery, she looked pretty and plastic like a Barbie doll, but in the end, everyone said she looked pretty. Then comes the play of Othello, where Othello gives his final speech. Othello is the protagonist and in a way, his mind is the antagonist that goes against him. This causes Othello to kill his wife. He feels conflicted after killing his wife, realizing that he made a mistake. He says, “Like the base Indian, threw a pearl away” (73). Pearls are white and Desdemona was white, while Othello was black.
