Othello is a blend of significance and faintness, in his own words "an honorable murderer" (V.2, 295). He was a defense general, and although he was a foreigner from Africa, Othello achieved his status by his skillfulness in the war. He was a man of intelligence and courage who, under pressure, could make an inspiring speech. Othello could have been considered a self-assured outsider who was intellectual in military matters but was somewhat socially insecure. He lead an intense life, wavering between success and fear.
In “Othello”, the main character, Othello, shows many flaws. But throughout the story, Othello isn’t the only character that shows character flaws. Most of the characters have some sort of flaws. The major flaws that are shown throughout the story are: Cassio’s fight, Desdemona’s loyalty, and Emilia’s loyalty are all character flaws that lead to the play’s tragic outcome. All of these flaws are connected also.
In Othello, one of ten tragic plays created by the prominent William Shakespeare, Iago uses the power of his persuasion to exploit both Othello and Cassio to do his bidding. The tragedy of “Othello” is the destruction of one’s integrity. The play is one of the great Shakespearean tragedies, which are all “a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, especially one concerning the downfall of the main character,” (Oxford Dictionary) who in this case is Othello. Nevertheless, there are fundamental differences in the way in which the writers portray the turmoil, hence why there will be an assessment, in this essay, on: how the writers represent the theme of emotional turmoil, whether it is a constant entity, and how the writers utilise the form, structure, and language, along with the cultural relevance of the texts. Turmoil through abhorrence can be noted in all three texts and parallels can be drawn between characters in Dolce and Othello between Benoit Sabarie and Iago. Shakespeare can be seen to represent this turmoil through abhorrence when disrupting the iambic pentameter just before the conclusion of Act I Scene III where we are presented with one of Iago’s many soliloquies; this being about his cunning plan to sabotage Othello.
In the beginning of the play, Othello is a good upstanding man. I know this because the Duke regards to Othello as Valiant (I,iii,56). Then as Iago manipulates him, he starts to become more aggressive and impulsive. For example, in act 3, scene 4, lines 103-114, Othello constantly calls for the handkerchief, until he storms out of the scene enraged. This shows how Othello starts to lose his calm and composure.
He gets so angry that he smothers Desdemona, he soon realizes that this was a mistake. This is a very weak point for Othello, because he has let the world get between he and his love. He was not strong enough to carry the both of them
