Outdoor Education: A Personal Analysis

We know you lead a busy life, full of activities, many of which are required of you. Tell us about something you do for the pleasure of it. (*)(100 words or fewer) During the stress of sophomore year, I discovered a software program capable of running 3D physics simulations. I quickly learned how to create liquid and smoke simulations with incredibly realistic, often beautiful, results. As a child, I rarely felt artistic but these simulations gave me the opportunity to create something new and intriguing while still incorporating my love of math and science. Because much of my free time is dedicated to sports and outdoor activities, having an artistic escape helps to create a sense of balance in my life that I felt was missing before. Due to this, much of my free time is spent hiking, biking, climbing and snowshoeing around the Puget Sound, which has shaped many of my aspirations. On an academic note, I hope to create more fuel-efficient, aerodynamic planes, thus to protecting the environment, ensuring that enough fuel is saved so planes can travel on less direct routes, avoiding flights over national parks. Seeing evidence of human interference in the wilderness is one of the most frustrating and disappointing things I have experienced in the backcountry, therefore finding ways to preserve the tranquility of nature through the creation of clean energy has become central goal of mine. As someone who has grown up around nature, my utmost goal is ensuring that every generation, be it in 50 or 500 years, can experience it, in its entirety, and experience the same sense of wonder and amazement that I do. POST has also inspired many of my extracurricular goals as well, such as completing the Pacific Crest Trail and joining an Emergency Search and Rescue team. Whether I achieve my goals inside or outside classroom, the sense of accomplishment upon completing a strenuous hike or a difficult climb is a feeling I want to continue experiencing for the rest of my life. At MIT, we seek to develop in each member of our community the ability and passion to work collaboratively for the betterment of humankind.
