The Outdoor Observation is located in John Mclaren Park; this is the second biggest park in San Francisco. The park I went to was the Herz playground that is next to the Coffman Pool. This park is a Natural Area of scenic meadows, grassland and wetland habitat. More than 7 miles of walking trails meander through its 312 acres, replete with native plants and wildlife. Established in 1927, the park is named for John McLaren, the ‘grandfather of Golden Gate Park. There are also basketball courts, baseball courts, tennis, and hiking trails. There are a lot of activities that children could do in this park. There was a family of 3 boys and 1 girl that came to the park while I was still there. The family went straight to the baseball field to let the sons practice baseball. I was able to observe play since the girl that was about 7 years old came to the play structure to play. The child played by herself while the rest of the family is on the baseball field. Playing by herself caused her to not have much language and communication development, “ children communicates during play, Language is the instrument of shared understanding as child play.”(Heidemann & Hewitt, p. 11), which this help to a child to learn to listen to others while play and gain that communication skills that will lead to social skills that she might lack if she only plays by herself. She started to play with the sand by the swing area and after awhile she got up to play on the swing. Soon she realized that she have trouble with the swing and asked for help. She asked kindly to her dad if he could push her, assuming he said no the little girl said, “I hate you”. The little girl goes back to the swing feeling disappointed. The dad could 've told her an alternative way instead of just telling her he don’t want to push her on the swing. This child might want to do something different with her father, since it seems like the father would usually do the same thing with her siblings. Depending on the
