“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell tells the story of Rainsford. The reader learns that Rainsford is a keen hunter. He is on a yacht headed to the Amazon to hunt Jaguars with a character named Whitney. While conversing with Whitney, Rainsford makes a bold statement, “The world is made up of two classes—the hunters and the hunted. Luckily, you and I are hunters.” Rainsford believes that he is a hunter and isn’t too concerned with feelings of the hunted. In the story Rainsford learns in the fight for survival, he should never underestimate an opponent in the sport of hunting.
In the beginning of the story, Rainsford falls off the yacht and finds himself at the mercy of the Caribbean Sea. Rainsford’s advanced survival skills tell him to swim ashore. On Ship-trap Island, Rainsford is reminded of the gunshots that led him overboard. His instinct for survival leads him to investigate the source. He finds himself in the home of a mad man by the name of Zaroff. Rainsford is held captive and is forced to play Zaroff’s sick game.
