Theodore Robert Bundy was an American serial killer, kidnapper, rapist, burglar, and necrophile who assaulted and murdered about 50 young women during the 1970s and possibly earlier. Bundy was born in Burlington, Vermont on November 24, 1946, starting life as his mother's secret shame. Eleanor Cowell was 22 years old and unmarried when she had her son Theodore, which humiliated her deeply religious parents. She delivered the child at a home for unwed mothers in Vermont and later brought her son to her parents in Philadelphia. To hide the fact he was an illegitimate child, Bundy was raised as the adopted son of his grandparents and was told that his mother was his sister.
Theodore "Ted" Bundy was one of the most notorious serial killers of the 20th century. His charm and intelligence made him somewhat of a celebrity during his trial and long after his execution in January of 1989. He was born in the shame of his mother, being told she was his sister when she gave birth out of wedlock. He was fascinated by the dark arts (macabre) as a child and drawn to knives.
After their victims were knocked out, both Dahmer and Bundy strangled a majority of their victims to death, and once they were dead, both killers followed their necrophiliac tendencies and performed sexual acts with the corpses. Furthermore, both Dahmer and Bundy believed that their victims were prized possessions and would dismember their bodies, in which they would keep certain “trophies”, such as a heart or a head, to remind them of their murders. Ultimately, while Dahmer and Bundy focused on different demographics and different luring techniques, both killers found joy in and shared their murderous tendencies. In conclusion, Jeffery Dahmer and Ted Bundy were two of the most well known and odious serial killers during the 1970s. Both shared important childhood characteristics that shaped their violent tendencies and also shared the way in which they killed their victims.

He wouldn’t just kill his victims, but sometimes decapitated them.
In fact, Bundy wasn’t extremely intelligent, and was not a genius, he only had an IQ of about 124, and he was not wildly successful in school, he was an average student who actually failed out of college after being dumped by a girlfriend, though he did return to school at a later date and finish (Michaud & Aynesworth, 2000). Even so, there was something that everyone could agree upon, Theodore Bundy was a deranged sociopath who became famous for murdering all of his victims, he was one of the serial killers to become extremely famous because of his killings, and some would say that he seemed happy to be getting all of the recognition (Michaud & Aynesworth, 2000). With articles written about him titled, “Bundy: The Man, The Myth, The Legend” he had truly become a legend (Caputi, 1989). After watching "Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes," I was struck by the disturbing nature of Bundy's crimes and the way in which he was able to manipulate those around him. The documentary portrayed Bundy as a master of deception who was able to charm his victims and evade capture for years, all while leading a seemingly normal life. One example from the documentary that stood out to me was Bundy's use of disguises to avoid detection. The documentary showed how Bundy would change his appearance and adopt different personas to blend in with his surroundings and avoid suspicion. For example, he would wear a fake cast or use crutches to appear less threatening, or he would wear a police uniform to gain access to his victims.

Ted in his early life also believed this, therefore he became a role model for Ted which shows why Ted would eventually carry this violent side in his life. Ted’s biological father was never known. This meant that she dated a string of men and one of these men became her husband and was a major influence on Ted and he lead him to change his name to Ted Bundy.
Bundy is believed to have killed his first victim at age twenty-two which is over the age of eighteen. When Bundy was three years old, he snuck into his teenaged aunt’s room and put butcher knives under the covers and remained standing there, grinning (The Biography of Ted Bundy by A&E 2007). In the book “The Need to Kill” written by Dr. Steven Egger, Dr. Van Austin discussed the final report on Ted Bundy in which he found Bundy not to be suffering from schizophrenia or psychotic (2003). Bundy underwent several psychological tests and he was found to be intact psychologically.
