The following essay will outline the reasons for the selection of using historical significance, historical evidence, historical perspectives, continuity and change and applying ethical thinking about the topic. Through the use of these tool’s students are able to investigate and make informed decisions. This enables them to understanding the causes and the consequences that occurred and how they may have impacted on New Zealand society. Through doing so, students are also able to think critically about the evidence available. Throughout the unit, emphasis is placed on the students taking ownership. The reason for this activity is to establish a student’s prior knowledge. As identified by Aitken & Sinnema (2008) when a student has the opportunity to access their prior knowledge and acknowledge what they know, they are more willing to integrate new learning. As each student’s prior knowledge will be different from the next, through working in groups students can utilise tuakana-teina teaching. This allows for diverse learners to build knowledge of each other and support those who may require additional assistance. After a student’s prior knowledge is established student can move onto looking at different perspectives. As stated by Enright (2014) perspectives lies at the heart of the Social Sciences achievement objectives. Therefore, the more informed a student is and the more skills that are developed to enable them understand perspectives the greater they will understand. The more exposed a student is to evidence, the more they will critically analyse the opinions and make sure they are not bias (Enright, 2014). Therefore, giving student a variety of tasks enables them to prepare a detailed and in depth understanding of what was happening during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. The lessons outlined also allow the students to investigate and analyse information across cultures.
