The anger at one’s self of being unable to do something causes such frustration that one must follow the two pathways that are given: giving up or stubbornly continuing it. This is what Malcolm X has faced during his time in prison, and he chose to continue to learn to read even though he was still in prison. In Malcolm X’s Learning to Read, it presents that the ability to read and understand is a valuable skill that opens up to a world of knowledge and destroying one’s ignorance of the world. I never know what calculus was until I took it, and it was, for me, very confusing and hard to do. I regret taking the class, but I did not drop out or change classes; I do not want to give up yet because I feel like I am being challenged and giving up would seem so wrong at that time. I became ambitious, and I want to understand what I am doing like with Malcolm X as he continued to learn to read in order to relinquish his frustration of being unable to read. However, Malcolm X’s only resource in learning to read was the books in prison which he was very productive with and hard working too. The amount of resources in my arsenal is a lot, for example was the internet, my textbook, my classmates, friends, notes, and a teacher; all those resources helped me gain more knowledge and understanding in doing calculus. Malcolm X eventually loves to read and would always read as much as he can, but in my case, I cannot say that I really love calculus and would do it all the time. Though, I do enjoy solving the problems and learning something new from it which gives me a sense of achievement. Malcolm X’s goal was to learn to read and eventually becoming his joy to read whereas my goal was to understand calculus and solve its problems which only stayed as a goal. In the end, both of us were able to achieve our goals and gained something valuable and
